LOVEEEEE

Loving this book, I don't want it to end! Milking the last 100 pages.

Before She Knew Himbrookiefair (6)
Happy I tried something new! (Some spoilers ahead...)

I've always been consistent in the types of books I pick out and read. Typically sticking to YA, fictional love stories, or non-fiction historical books (hello JFK!). This one had me hooked from the summary. I have a total 'hang over' over this book right now. From mental illness, to marital problems, to murder this book covers all its topics in a suspensful manner.

While the book is in third person, you do get to read into each of the character's minds. You are in the loop the entire time, always knowing things before other characters.

There are some predictable portions of this book- which tends to happen when you read a lot- but there was also a lot of unexpected twists! I loved every part of this book and the ending was AWESOME as well!

One part of the ending confused me ---just when was it suppose to be that Hen and Dustin Miller met in the bar and went back to his place? Isnt he suppose to be a much younger kid? The timeline confused me! Any ideas?

Tawni (6)
They met a few months before he was murdered. He was in college already and old enough to drink. I think it said he was 22-23 when he died. Hen was in her mid thirties, so there's a definite age difference there!
Ange (6)
I found that part a bit confusing also!
Pierre1812 (33)
Hen and Dustin met a few months before Dustin was murdered. Hen went to a bar to sketch some people while Lloyd was away. Dustin was younger kid when he raped Courtney, that was his relation to Matthew. But when Hen met him, while younger than Hen, he was already in college I believe.

Before She Knew HimPierre1812 (33)
Mixed feelings. Spoilers ahead.

Mixed feelings about this one. There are parts of it I really enjoyed, Hen was a great main character and I thought that her past struggles with reality and depression were approached in a very appropriate way. My favorite part was when her twisted and messed up relationship with Matthew started to happen, their talks were really unexpected. But that’s pretty much it, I really enjoyed those two aspects enough to make me rate this as a like rather than a dislike.

Every other character was completely disposable and one-sided. Lloyd and Mira were wasted characters for me. Lloyd’s betrayal while hinted at earlier on, still felt out of place. I also wasn’t crazy about how Mira and Hen both had opportunities to cheat but decided not to, it all felt way too convenient in a way. Almost everything seemed to convenient and just fall into place though. Also, what was the deal with Matthew’s parents? It felt forced and weird and just... ugh... the bathing suit? Forcing the mom to eat on the floor in front of her kid? It never really gets explained or resolved, it felt like weirdness for the sake of weirdness.

Also wasn’t a fan of the twist. And when Matthew is describing killing Dustin, he mentions restraining his head to the headrest and then putting a plastic bag over his head, that’s physically impossible! If Dustin’s head was duct taped to the headrest, he wouldn’t be able to place a bag over his head.

In the end, I was kind of hoping for one more conversation between Hen and Matthew, or even Mira.

brookiefair (6)
I think the information pertaining to Matthew's parents was placed to give the reader a back ground into why he is the way he is now. I agree--- very weird.

Nope

I'm 1/3 of the way through and just cannot finish. I cannot get into this and see no point of forcing myself even though I paid extra for this as an add on. Ugh. Most of the time I can power through but not this one. I'm getting too old to regret wasting my time.

(1)
I honestly agree. This was my first book of the month selection, I was intrigued because it was based in Houston and explored the idea of love and "home". I'm almost done with the book but I'm a little disappointed. There are parts of the book that were interesting, I "liked"/was interested by the main story, however I couldn't get into it. I can appreciate the raw nature of the writing, but it is tough getting through this whole book. ????????‍♀️
The MunicipalistsCB (13)
Pretty good

I liked this one. Very different from my other reads but pretty good.

Queeniemgrimaudo (1)
Undecided...

I feel like everybody is raving about this book while I'm over here like "eh..."

I found Queenie herself irritating. The first 2/3 of the book was very slow and I felt like I was just watching Queenie make one terrible decision after another (like what are you doing!? and why am I still reading!?!). However, the last 1/3 of the book was great, there were a few surprises I didn't see coming that made the novel more interesting.

I loved the flashbacks, I wish more had been included. I felt like it helped me understand Queenie better. I also wish more attention had been given to Queenie's relationship with her parents, particularly her mom. I feel like that could have been developed more.

Overall, the book wasn't terrible. I just wouldn't recommend it. And looking back, I feel like there were other books I would have rather been reading (and picked for my box!)

Laura (1)
I agree with you whole heartedly. For me the book was slow at the beginning and at times I forced myself to keep reading knowing Queenie would eventually reveal her herself.

Should I finish?

I'm struggling with this book. I'm about 100 pages in and not into it all. Does it pivk up? Thinking about throwing the towel in. It is sloeing downmy reading.

(1)
I’m having a difficult time with it as well, I think it’s the interview style writing.
Jroussey (5)
Yeah. I just finished. It got a little better. It was okay not my favorite.
Before She Knew HimStacilyn (3)
Wow...SO GLAD I started with this book!

The March book selection was my first with BOTM. I am so happy that I chose "Before She Knew Him." I literally finished the book in a little under 48 hours - I couldn't put it down! It grabbed me from the very first page and wouldn't let me go. Even once I finished, I was still thinking about it! The jacket info states that this is a first for this author. I can not wait for another of his books. I am now starting the second book (The Silent Patient - BOTM January 2019) that I received in my March box. I am hoping it is as good as this one!

brookiefair (6)
Im so happy I got this one as well! Not my typical type of pick. I have a total "Hang over" from this one!
ShannaDavis (6)
I also loved Before She Knew Him, & The Silent Patient! Happy reading :)

LOVED!!! - **MAJOR Spoilers!!

Okay, WOW! I absolutely LOVED this book! Could not put it down. I didn't even remotely see that ending coming. I have an infant and a toddler, and I finished this in 2 days. Definitely a favorite from BOTM!

Looking for a little clarity or opinions here - did Mira know about Matthew's alter ego Richard? It said throughout the book that Mira didn't like Richard. When she came home abruptly and found Matthew's office disheveled, she assumed Richard had been there. So if Richard died during infancy, then Mira had never actually met him face to face - unless of course she had, in which she would know her husband wasn't well. And if that's the case, then why was she so shocked when the neighbor accused her husband of murder? See what I'm saying?

The only other explanation is if she simply didn't like him because of the way Matthew talked about his brother. But wouldn't that be super odd, to have never met your husband's brother that he sometimes talked to?

Let me hear your thoughts on that!

brookiefair (6)
I believe that Mira was aware of Richard. I was a bit confused, but when she says how she thinks Richard slept in the office makes me think she was aware. I think she knew who her husband was-2 personalities that were both violent. She was in denial in her own mind, wanted her life to carry on. Matthew also says he knows Mira doesn't like Richard- so this also leads me to believe shes 'met' him and has tried to get Mathew help. Maybe thats why he only 'calls Richard' when Mira is out of town..
VictoriaCadence (4)
Hi Tawni. I think Mira did know about Richard. In her scenes, she is always battling with the voice inside her head. She knew from the start that Matthew killed Jay, but I think she just tried to suppress it because she did not want to acknowledge that he was crazy. I really believe Mira knew about Richard/Matthew's split personality condition. He states that Mira hated when Richard was around which makes me think that she discovered the truth and wanted her "Bear" to be with her. I finished the book in 3 sittings. It was good and the twists shocked me for sure, but it really freaked me out. Also, everything just fell into place too easily IMO.
Tawni (6)
It definitely freaked me out a bit too. I was thinking she must know about the split personality if Richard was to never be around Mira and for her to dislike him so much. I think I'm going to read the book again to get a better context for that relationship and see if I pick up on anything else I might have missed. I flew through this book!
Pierre1812 (33)
I wasn’t too crazy about this book. I really enjoyed parts of it, but as a whole it was a bit disappointing for me. That’s an excellent point you bring up and it’s my biggest problem with twists is that it all has to make sense at the end... the fact that Richard was aware of everything and he was never around Mira made sense, but when you have Mira’s viewpoint saying “Richard must have slept here” it just doesn’t really work... at least not for me...
Stacilyn (3)
Wow! Tawnie... great question!! Now that you mention it, I am wondering the same thing (whether Mira knew about "Richard" or not). I will now go read some of the replies to your question to see what other think about it. Great review btw. Almost exactly the way I am about to write mine...finished in two days, couldn't put it down etc, etc etc...lol

I agree! how did she think that Richard had slept over in the office or wherever it was. Like its weird that she dint like Richard but is that just from what Matthew has told her about him that made her not like him? or did she meet the other personality of Matthew. ugh lol

So torn

I'm really torn on this book. And I feel like I'm in the minority in not all-out loving it. Every review I've seen has been amazing so I went into this thinking THIS is going to be my favorite book of 2019. Especially since I love this author's other work.

I was really digging it when I started it, I loved the way it was written and I loved how we got to hear from so many different characters. But about 1/2 way through I found myself so bored. Maybe it's because I'm not super interested in the music making process?

I just felt like it turned into the same thing on repeat- Daisy and Billy hate each other, fight, write a lyric, Daisy gets high, Billy gets mad at Daisy for being high, Eddie is mad at everyone all the time. And then little snippets from other characters. And all of this on repeat until the end of the book.

I really liked the way it ended though, it felt really satisfying. I just felt like it took a long way to get there.

I also loved all the female characters. They were so kickass and I felt like there was a woman every woman could identify with - a mother, a career gal, someone that felt lost, someone that just wanted love. I loved how badass and feminist all the women were so I loved reading about their stories.

Does anyone else feel this way? I'm glad I read it and feel that it's worth a read, I was just honestly, pretty bored in the middle section of the book and felt that it was just the same thing on repeat.

les29 (1)
I am with you. I found the whole thing very repetitive and predictable, the end was cute, but not a book I plan on keeping to read again later.
Daisy Jones & The SixEmilyC (11)
I want to listen to Aurora

So I devoured this book in two days, it pulled me right into the 70s music scene. The discovery of the lyrics in the back was a delightful surprise. Anyone else just dying to hear that album now? And other than Fleetwood Mac (obvs), who do you imagine The Six to sound like?

EricaMarois (4)
I devoured it, too. And I can’t stop listening to Fleetwood Mac now! I’m excited for the Amazon series— will be so cool to hear all the music! I’m just wondering who they’ll cast. Anyone have any guesses?
EmilyC (11)
For Billy, my first thought was Taron Egerton. Although he’s playing Elton John in a new biopic this year, so that could be too much 70’s rock scene for the same actor. But he can sing really well, and plays soulful and sweet but with an edge. And for Daisy, I was picturing young Kate Hudson in my head as I read the book. Elle Fanning? To me she has a 70s free-wheeling vibe already and she’s the perfect age for young Daisy. Don’t know if she sings though ????
MaggieMurray (1)
I think Miley Cyrus would be a great Daisy.
Mina (30)
Yes! With Vanessa Hudgens as Camilla and Garett Hedlund as Billy.

Waiting...

How long does it take to usually receive your BOTM order? I ordered on March 1st.

Tawni (6)
It's always pretty slow for me. It takes at least a week to get to me from when I place my order.
CaitlinJaime (1)
It typically takes weeks for mine to arrive...
KristineCoumbe (27)
It seems to change monthly. I ordered mine on the 28th. It was shipped om the 2nd and I received it on the 7th. Weirdly when I looked at the tracking which was sketchy this month I should have gotten it on the 6th. I also think it depends on where you live in the USA. I am in the upper midwest and it can be 4 to 6 days to arrive.
lissajacobs (9)
There is a tracking number when you go to your box and that order, or in the email they send you saying it shipped.
Pierre1812 (33)
Depends on the postal service really. The fastest one I got shipped on the 2nd and got here on the 5th, but one time it shipped on the 1st and it didn’t arrive until the 12th...

Amazing Service

Just ordered last Thursday evening and it was here by 3 this Monday afternoon! BOTM & the USPS worked overtime getting this month's selection out. So excited!

That is crazy fast! I am jealous. Enjoy your books!

Eye-catching Cover

I just received mine today, a few days earlier than I expected! I can't wait to start reading it! What does everyone think about the cover? I think the bright yellow and black really draw your attention to it, and the shadow on her face creates a suspenseful tone before even reading the inside cover.

brookiefair (6)
Love the cover and love the colors of the book with out it!
michelemrogacki (6)
I received my books on Wednesday, started reading Before She Knew Him on Thursday and finished Friday night. It drew me in. I had to finish, but was disappointed in the end! I don't want to give it away, but it got a little too gruesome and then obvious for me.
Tawni (6)
Really? I disagree on the ending, I was not expecting any of the ending. I really enjoyed it!
The MunicipalistsGloryJotter (2)
Probably gonna be disappointed, but it's gonna be a wild ride.

I picked this for one reason and one reason only: this sounds to me like a wacked out Futurama fanfiction where A/U Hermes and Bender go on an adventure. I mean, really, a bureaucrat and a day-drinking irreverent robot solving mysteries in the ~wOrLd Of ToMoRrOw~? Sign me up, baby!

(2)
I have to admit. I didn't think of Futurama, but now that I can see it clearly, I'm excited to read it with them in mind.
KristineCoumbe (27)
I thought the same thing. I hope I am not disappointed.
SailorMoon (4)
Glad I'm not the only one who immediately thought of Bender and Hermes based on the description. Still interested to see where this goes, though.

Outside my usual area

I chose this book, in part, because it sounds pretty far afield of what I usually read. I'm honestly not big into sci-fi, I'm more of a historical fiction person. That said, I'm a huge nerd and work in an area where AI plays an enormous role. Excited to dig in and see where it takes us. It's apparently humorous at points, and I could use a bit of humor right now!

Anyone familiar with this author's other work?

New to Book Club

So I'm new here and these usually aren't my types of books, but I'm trying something new. Cross my fingers, I'm pretty excited to see how this Book of the Month turns out.

Kayla (110)
Reese Witherspoon's book club also chose Daisy Jones & The Six. And supposedly, this is going to become a TV mini-series! You and going to LOVE Book of the Month.
VictoriaCadence (4)
Wow! Really? I got really attached to the characters.
karebear0316 (4)
That's happened a couple of month's where I've seen BOTM and other book clubs have the same picks. I don't know why that turns me off a little bit - I think because these are supposed to be hand selected by BOTM, but when other clubs choose the same, it makes it seem like the authors bought their way in. Am I the only one that is cynical about this?!
lissajacobs (9)
I was stuck in a cycle of reading the same books and not knowing how to venture out and find books that were different that I would still like. BOTM is the greatest thing that has happened to me. I'm up to twenty six books from them since joining last May and they are a treat to read, very different to what I would usually read, and unique each month. I love it so much.

Did Anyone Notice?

I guess I clicked too early and it showed that Daisy Jones & The Six was sold out after about a minute of it being shown. I was about to freak out until I refreshed the page a few times. Have been looking forward to this book for months!

StefanieWard (2)
What?! Are your picks available? Mine haven't been posted. I am really hoping for Daisy Jones! I need confirmation that it is a pick or I will go mad!
BethRea (3)
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who's been obsessed over this month's choices!
BethRea (3)
So excited! I've been on pins & needles, hoping Daisy Jones would be up for grabs! I have to be at work @ 6 and they hadn't posted before I left. Still hadn't posted when I checked back on lunch. Finally the picks are up! The confetti's been thrown and I CAN'T WAIT!!! To celebrate, I added on the Peter Swanson and the Barbara Kingsolver I've had my eye on. I was so afraid they'd sell out - happened to me last month with The Silent Patient.
StefanieWard (2)
Nevermind! I refreshed and I am soooo happy!

I submitted my box so fast so I could make sure I’d get it. Can’t wait to read it!
