Synopsis

A few years ago, David Alvarez had it all: a six-figure book deal, a loving boyfriend, and an exciting writing career. His debut novel was a resounding success, which made the publication of his second book—a total flop—all the more devastating. Now, David is single, lonely, and desperately trying to come up with the next great idea for his third manuscript, one that will redeem him in the eyes of readers, reviewers, the entire publishing world…and maybe even his ex-boyfriend.

But good ideas are hard to come by, and the mounting pressure of a near-empty bank account isn’t helping. When David connects with a sexy stranger on a dating app, he figures a wild night out in New York City may be just what he needs to find inspiration. Lucky for him, his date turns out to be handsome, confident, and wealthy, not to mention the perfect distraction from yet another evening staring at a blank screen.

After one of the best nights of his life, David wakes up hungover but giddy—only to find prince charming dead next to him in bed. Horrified, completely confused, and suddenly faced with the implausible-but-somehow-plausible idea that he may have actually killed his date, David calls the only person he can trust in a moment of crisis: his literary agent, Stacey.

Together, David and Stacey must untangle the events of the previous night, cover their tracks, and spin the entire misadventure into David’s career-defining novel—if only they can figure out what to do with the body first.

I Might Be in Trouble

A SLIGHT COMPLICATION

It’s 6:47 a.m.

Staring at the numbers flashing on the clock brings an odd sense of comfort to my chest. The time is one of the few things I can be certain of—an undeniable fact, something to hold on to even in this moment, when I’m not sure I can trust myself or my own memory.

I’m foggy with exhaustion. Every inch of my body is protesting all the alcohol I drank last night. Nothing feels real, except for those tiny numbers shining in green. But then, unexpectedly, a million questions flood my mind: What exactly happened? What have I done? How did I end up here? It’s this last question that grabs hold of me, that makes everything else take a back seat.

How did I end up here?

I never thought of myself as capable of killing someone, not even accidentally. I find it hard to believe I’m actually responsible for doing this, but I wonder how surprised other people would be if they could catch a glimpse of me right now. They might say they were able to see something in me all along—some sort of sign that told them David Alvarez was deranged. Some indication that he might just have the gall to end a man’s life so unexpectedly, so callously.

Although, I realize with a small glimmer of hope, there’s also the possibility that it’s not callousness I’ve shown, but stupidity.

Yes, that seems a lot more likely. I’ve been stupid. Going out to meet this handsome stranger, agreeing to keep the drinks coming even when we were both wasted, bringing him back to my apartment—it was all just a matter of making one bad choice after another, wasn’t it?

I wish I could take it all back. I wish I could return to twelve hours ago and stop myself from going through with any of it—but perhaps the string of poor decision-making that led to this moment began much earlier than yesterday. It may have begun in Stacey’s office, during the last meeting I had with her. Or maybe even before that, when I started making all the mistakes that led to my career imploding.

How did I end up here?

I try to push the question away, all too aware that I’ll drive myself mad if I keep attempting to answer it. For now, there are more important things to consider, much more urgent matters to occupy myself with, two critical facts I need to focus on.

It’s 6:47 a.m., and there’s a dead body on my bed.

Why I love it

Picture waking up with the worst hangover of your life. Now picture it again, but your sneaky link from last night is very, very dead in bed beside you. Nightmare fuel—and also the perfect setup for a dark comedy in I Might Be in Trouble.

David is a struggling author whose literary star is fading after a successful debut. When he meets Robert on Grindr, a whirlwind night out in New York City turns into a potential crime scene when Robert winds up dead. With help from his ride-or-die literary agent, Stacey, David covers up his involvement and tries to move on with his life. But Stacey sees the debacle as promising inspiration for David’s much-anticipated next book and encourages him to write a thriller based on the experience. Things are looking up for David, until Robert’s suspicious husband appears…

Propulsive, madcap, and lots of fun (despite Robert’s untimely death), I Might Be in Trouble is a story about faking it till you make it and following your dreams even when they take you on some very strange detours. From growing up closeted in the suburbs to the glittering world of New York’s literary scene, Daniel Aleman deftly takes readers on a dizzying tour of the dark and light sides of the human experience.
