Quick take

This provocative novel asks a salacious question: Why settle for “the one” when you could swing for twice the fun?

Synopsis

Georgina Wagman has it all—a great marriage, a great job at a prestigious law firm, and great friends. She’s living the life she always wanted, and everything is perfect. Until, that is, she walks in on her husband Nathan in a compromising position with a junior associate. Georgina has a moment of crisis. But divorce is not a part of the five-year plan, so she comes up with an idea to save her marriage and recapture the spark. She and Nathan are going to become swingers.

Georgina isn’t going to embark on this adventure alone, though. Her friends Felix and Norah and their respective partners decide to tag along for the ride. They’ve got relationship woes of their own that swinging just might fix. Georgina, convinced Felix and Norah belong together, is thrilled. What better place to reignite romance between two people destined to be together than a swingers’ party? Her plan is foolproof, until she runs into a college ex at the first party. When they reconnect, Georgina will find herself torn between her head and her heart, with her very happiness hanging in the balance.

The Lifestyle

Chapter 1

Georgina Wagman’s life was so good she felt bad about it. Not so bad she’d change anything but bad enough she’d made it her mission to help others reach their potential in love, career, and epicurean delights. So it was with the best of intentions that she ordered four boxes of the richest, crispiest cannoli in New York City for the junior associates working late on Friday night and hand-delivered them office to office. How could she have known they’d give everyone food poisoning—the Italian bakery was A-rated by the health department!—or that the thirtieth-floor restrooms were closed for cleaning? Building management should have waited until after hours for that. Everyone knows lawyers work through dinner.

Sweaty and groaning, the associates had scattered thirty minutes later—some to the privacy of their apartments, others to the stairwell in search of a restroom on a different floor—except one first-year associate named Meredith De Luca. When Georgina had stopped by Meredith’s office with the box of cannoli on display, she’d politely declined.

“I don’t have much of a sweet tooth,” she’d said.

“Only bad cannoli are too sweet,” Georgina had insisted.

Why I love it

“Georgina Wagman’s life was so good she felt bad about it.” That’s a hell of a first line, isn’t it? It’s a perfect opening because anyone who thinks their life is faultless is in for a rude awakening, and that’s exactly what’s about to happen to Georgina in The Lifestyle. When she walks in on her husband cheating, type-A and very determined Georgina doesn’t let it derail her life. Instead, she decides that if he’s going to sleep with other women, it’ll be on her terms. They’ll become swingers.

High jinks ensue as Georgina’s friends and their respective partners come along for the ride in NYC’s exclusive swinging scene. On top of all that, what happens when Georgina encounters an old flame at one of these late-night, clothing-optional parties? Well, you’ll have to read to find out.

I loved this debut novel by Taylor Hahn. I mean, what’s not to love? It’s laugh-out-loud funny, sexy, soulful, and complicated. There’s scandal, friendship, sex clubs, and unexpected discoveries, both in and out of the bedroom. Most of all, this is a story about a woman who finds empowerment through exploring her true desires in sex, love, and life. The Lifestyle is the perfect beach read, and I hope you’ll love it as much as I do.

Did I mention that Taylor and I are former roommates and best friends? If you’re wondering if our twenty-something escapades in NYC inspired any of the plot lines, you’ll have to keep wondering. Some secrets are meant to be kept! Wink, wink.
